The GREENFUTURE project, developed under Erasmus+ CBHE Strand 3, aims to enhance sustainability
and resilience indicators within Mongolian HEIs.

The primary goal is to establish Sustainability Offices in Mongolian universities while integrating the
country into the UI GreenMetric global ranking system. By doing so, the project seeks to improve
institutional sustainability practices, align Mongolian universities with global environmental and digital
transformation standards, and contribute to national and international sustainability efforts.

The initiative is designed to align with Mongolia’s Vision 2050 and the United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring that HEIs contribute meaningfully to national and global
sustainability strategies. It also supports the European Green Deal by fostering sustainable growth and
digital transformation in higher education.

The project emerges from a detailed needs analysis, which identified significant gaps in sustainability
policies, evaluation frameworks, and institutional capacities across Mongolian universities. By consulting
a broad range of stakeholders, including universities, ministries, and non-governmental organizations,
the consortium has developed a strategy to integrate sustainability indicators into university evaluation
systems, policy development, and institutional management.

A core component of GREENFUTURE is the development and implementation of a sustainability
framework tailored to Mongolian universities.

This framework will include sustainability indicators, policy recommendations, and training programs
for university staff and external stakeholders such as municipalities and NGOs. The project also
focuses on policy alignment, ensuring that Mongolian HEIs adhere to international sustainability
standards and best practices.

To achieve this, capacity-building programs will be implemented, emphasizing the integration of
sustainability awareness, digital transformation, and inclusion. Additionally, Mongolia’s participation in
global sustainability networks like UI GreenMetric will be facilitated, enhancing international
collaboration and recognition.

The project’s implementation is guided by a strong multi-stakeholder consortium that brings together
12 partners from four different countries, including HEIs, research centers, quality assurance agencies,
and the Mongolian Ministry of Education. The methodological approach is highly participatory,
encouraging collaboration between academia, policymakers, and society.

Through a combination of strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and digitalization,
GREENFUTURE aims to create a lasting impact by institutionalizing sustainability practices in
Mongolian HEIs.
